The right technology starts with the right problem.

Assess digitalisation by how work improves, not by how advanced the application sounds.

Why technology matters

As a business grows, information crosses more people and decisions. Technology can support more structured records, more controlled access and more consistent repetitive work. These benefits depend on process quality, data and adoption. Purchasing an application is different from successfully changing how work gets done.

Choose a specific problem

Translate “we want to be more digital” into a question that can be examined: why purchase approvals stall, why stock differs or why proposals receive no follow-up. Identify who is affected, how often it happens and representative transactions. A clear objective separates necessary features from attractive extras.

Assess people and data readiness

Identify an internal sponsor, process owner and primary users. Review available data and the time required to clean and migrate it. If basic procedures still change daily, stabilise them first. Delaying a purchase to clarify requirements can be more appropriate than a rushed implementation.

Define realistic success measures

Record a baseline before the project: report preparation time, corrections or transactions without an owner. Choose measures that fit the problem and can actually be recorded. Avoid universal savings promises; benefits should be tested in your business context. Include transition costs and supplier dependency when comparing options.

Start small, evaluate, then expand

Start with a workflow that matters but can be bounded. Agree scope, timing, tests, support and data rights in writing. Evaluate after users try actual processes. Expand when the foundations are clear and the initial benefit can be demonstrated.
